At the very least, most people understand that all types of automatic cars are cars that doesn’t rely on manual gear-shifting. What you may not know, however, is that there are several types of automatic transmission (AT) systems used in cars around the world.
Also known as self-shifting transmission or dual pedal technology, AT systems are designed to automatically change your gears for you as your vehicle moves. Cars that utilise this technology offer a high level of relief for drivers, especially those who often travel in thick bumper-to-bumper traffic.
There are different types of AT systems, including automatic transmission (AT), Automated Manual Transmission (AMT), Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), and Tiptronic Transmission. Let’s take a closer look at each of these systems.
Automatic Transmission
The traditional automatic transmission system, also known as an automatic torque converter, is the most used type of self-shifting technology in the world. Think basic automatics that don’t necessarily have pedal shifts.
This system uses a hydraulic fluid coupling or a torque converter in pace of a clutch pedal to change gears. A vehicle’s Engine Control Unit is directly connected to the system to allow smooth and precise engine control throughout every drive.
Automated Manual Transmission
AMTs are semi-autonomous transmission system. Many vehicle manufacturers refer to these systems by specific brand names; for example, Maruti Suzuki AMT system the Auto Gear Shift or AGS.
The AMT uses a normal clutch-and-gear configuration along with sensors, actuators, processors, and pneumatics to simulate manual gear use. This type of transmission is not very expensive compared to traditional automatic gearboxes, but offers drivers much more mileage than manual gearboxes, making them an effective hybrid between full-and semi-automatic.
